Where Does Our Sex Drive Come From

Sexual function is a complex biologic process that is dependent on the brain and its ability to 'talk' to target glands and organs in distant parts of the body such as the ovaries or testes that manufacture estrogen or testosterone in the proper amounts for your body.

Hormones, or chemical messengers are also responsible for regulating the activity of nitric oxide in the circulatory system. Nitric oxide acts on smooth muscle tissue and allows engorgement of the penis or clitoris necessary for full arousal.

Normal decline of hormones occurs with age and disease. Menopause is a prime example where decreases in both estrogen and testosterone can negatively impact sexual responsiveness in females. In males, testosterone begins to decline as they enter the third decade of life.
